Its best to use this approach for the younger ones. Infants struggle to regulate their own sleep cycles, and new parents often do not know how to best teach their infant to sleep through the night. Doing these two actions simultaneously distracts the baby from crying. It was popularized by Tracy Hogg in her book, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer: How to Calm, Connect, and Communicate with Your Baby. With the shush pat, you place baby in their crib, gently roll her to her side as you continue to hold her, and gently pat her back while making a shushing noise near. The shushing and patting are supposed to mimic the whooshing of the blood flowing in the womb and the mother’s heart beating. The pick up, put down method is a sleep training method. It’s too early to use one of the sleep training methods to help a baby with colic sleep, but you can use the shush pat method by Tracey Hogg to help soothe your baby to sleep. She does really well for the most part with this. While the baby is calm, awake, and laying on their side, the parent shushes loudly and simultaneously pats the baby’s bottom or lower back. We started around 3.5 months gradually weaning away the paci with rocking, then we started shortening the time we rocked, then we moved onto pat/shush in the crib. Has anyone used the Shush-Pat method with their LO? Mine is almost 4 months and due to frequent night wakings (and some serious sleep deprivation) his ped has recommended i start letting him fuss/cry to get him used to falling asleep in his crib without me picking him up every time he makes a peep (he’s only eating once at night but the rest of the wakings I’ve been picking him up and letting him fall back asleep in my arms and he used to transfer back to his crib but that has stopped.
